Students Interview Authors: Lucy Anne Hurston

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale HurstonLast week, as part of our ongoing series on Authors on Air, students in Jennifer Hubbell's English class at Marymount High School in Los Angeles interviewed Lucy Anne Hurston--author, sociologist, college professor, and niece of Zora Neale Hurston--about her aunt's life and her 20th-century masterpiece Their Eyes Were Watching God.

Smart students. Smart questions. My favorite? "We were so upset when Tea Cake died! Eventually, we realized that Tea Cake had to die so that Janie could to experience personal growth. But we were still mad. In your opinion, why did Teacake have to die in the end? Why was Hurston unable to depict an equitable, happy, and long-lasting relationship between a man and a woman?"

You can hear Lucy's answer here!
